Description

This ceramic installation came about after the removal of the old folding tables and benches in the high school cafeteria at Alfred-Almond Central School, leaving seven sets of recessed pockets in the wall. The tiles are all New York State themed, including NYS birds, NYS creatures, NYS native flowers, NYS native trees, NYS products, NYS Landmarks, and People and Places of NY (New Yorkers of note, cities map, Native American regions map and the Five Nations flag, topographical map tile made by a visually impaired student, and regions of New York State map). The series was done over several years, with the first set of tiles, the bird series, having been made by an eighth-grade group pre-Covid, but left unglazed until a couple of years later. Each series is student researched and created. Some tiles are made by individual students, while the larger landscapes were made collaboratively in small groups. Each of the past three summers has seen an alcove or two completed, with the final two installations taking place July 2023. Hundreds of students in grades 8-12 have had a hand in this project with the knowledge that their work would enhance the school environment and teach about the identity of New York State. Having lived in New York for most of my life, it has been an absolute honor and joy to guide the creation of a lasting piece of art with such meaningful components.
